We continue to the historic Belém district, one of the most important areas of Lisbon.
Belém is closely associated with Portugal’s Age of Discoveries and the legendary explorers who sailed from Lisbon to Africa, Asia and the Americas.
The wealth generated during this extraordinary period helped finance some of Portugal’s most impressive monuments.
Here we will discover three of Lisbon’s most famous landmarks.
Our first major stop in Belém is the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery.
This spectacular Manueline monument was built during Portugal’s prosperous maritime era and is one of the country’s most important historical and architectural landmarks.
We will visit the church, where entrance is currently free, subject to opening times and local regulations.
Inside, you can admire the impressive architecture and learn about the historical figures connected with the monastery.
Your guide will explain the symbolism of the Manueline style and the monastery’s connection to Portugal’s maritime expansion.

Next, we continue to the iconic Belém Tower.
Built on the banks of the Tagus River, the tower was originally designed as part of Lisbon’s defensive system and later became an enduring symbol of Portugal’s Age of Discoveries.
